Illness Policy:

Little Learners uses guidelines set forth from the Virginia Department of Health and the CDC to protect children and staff from contagious illness, including COVID-19. This guidance allows us to work closely with parents to implement practices that best meet the needs of our school based on community transmission rates of COVID-19 provided by the CDC. We practice multiple prevention strategies and remain vigilant about changing conditions. The benefit of mitigation efforts must always be weighed against the cost to children’s overall well-being.  We have implemented strategies for High Transmission Level, Medium Transmission Level and Low Transmission Level.  The level and it’s guidelines are posted on the front door and shared with families as guidelines change.

If a child is in attendance and the following conditions or symptoms are observed, the child will be kept comfortable and isolated in a supervised area. Parents will be notified to pick the child up as soon as possible.

  • Fever; underarm temperature of 100 degrees or greater
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Symptoms of strep throat
  • Symptoms of communicable disease
  • Head lice
  • Additional conditions that require a greater need for care than staff can provide and impacts the care of other children in the facility

Contagious illnesses require the child to be on antibiotics 24 hours (if needed) and fever free (for a minimum of 24 hours, depending on the COVID Transmission Level) without the use of fever-reducing medications before returning to the center.

A child with an infectious illness may return to the center with a doctor’s approval

When a child becomes ill at home, the parent should notify the Director and other parents will be notified if necessary.

In the case of a disaster:

The center has an emergency/disaster plan in place. This plan can be viewed upon request at any time. Please inform staff of any changes of emergency contact numbers so we can contact you.
